Exposed

The brands you THINK are clean โ€” and what they're actually putting in your products

What's Inside

Table of Contents

The Problem

They knew you were paying attention.
So they changed the packaging.

A few years ago moms started reading labels. They started Googling ingredients. They started demanding better. And the billion-dollar personal care and supplement industry noticed.

So they didn't change their formulas. They changed their marketing.

They added eucalyptus leaves to the packaging. They used words like "clean," "natural," "plant-based," and "non-toxic" โ€” words that have no legal definition in the United States, which means anyone can use them for anything. They created entire sub-brands that looked artisanal and small-batch while being owned by the same corporations that make conventional toxic products.

"In 2024 alone, brands paid more than $700 million in settlements for misleading safety claims. And more than half of all 'eco' marketing today contains information that is either inaccurate, incomplete, or intentionally deceptive."

As a certified naturopath and HTMA practitioner, I have spent years helping burnt-out moms understand what's actually in their products. And the thing that makes me most frustrated โ€” more than the toxic ingredients themselves โ€” is that women are working so hard to do better, spending more money to do better, and being lied to while doing it.

This guide names names. Every brand in this guide has publicly available ingredient lists, independent laboratory testing, active lawsuits, or documented corporate ownership that tells the real story. Nothing in here is opinion โ€” it's all receipts.

50%+
of all "eco" marketing contains inaccurate or deceptive information
$700M+
paid in settlements for misleading safety claims in 2024 alone
0
FDA-regulated definitions for "clean," "natural," or "non-toxic"
5%
minimum natural content required to legally label a product "natural"

A product can be labeled "natural" if only 5% of its ingredients are derived from nature. That means 95% can be synthetic โ€” and the label is still technically legal.

This is the world your family is shopping in. Let's change that.

Chapter 02 โ€” Skincare & Beauty

The "Natural" Brands
With Toxic Ingredients

These are the brands with earthy packaging, "inspired by nature" messaging, and ingredient lists that tell a very different story.

Aveeno
"Active Naturals" โ€” trusted for generations
๐Ÿšซ Greenwashing
The Claim
"Active natural ingredients," "more sustainable formulas," and "we strive to bring you natural ingredients that are safe and effective."
The Reality
Aveeno uses ingredients that are not considered safe or natural and have a variety of harmful effects including hormone disruption, irritation, and carcinogenic properties. The oat-and-green branding creates a powerful natural impression that the ingredient list does not support.
๐Ÿ”ด Red Flag Ingredients Found
Methylparaben Propylparaben Benzophenone-3 Fragrance Phenoxyethanol
๐Ÿ“‹
The Receipt: Multiple independent ingredient analyses by clean beauty researchers confirm the presence of hormone-disrupting parabens and synthetic fragrance in products marketed with "active naturals" messaging.
๐Ÿญ Owned by: Johnson & Johnson โ€” one of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies
Neutrogena
"Plant-Based" Makeup Remover โ€” scientifically proven
โš–๏ธ Active Lawsuit
The Claim
Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes marketed as "plant-based" and "compostable" โ€” natural ingredients for gentle effective cleansing.
The Reality
A federal class action lawsuit alleges that 13 of the 15 ingredients in the products are not plant-based as advertised โ€” the majority of ingredients are synthetic and non-plant-based despite explicit "plant-based" marketing claims.
๐Ÿ”ด Red Flag Ingredients Found
Fragrance PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate Phenoxyethanol Disodium EDTA
โš–๏ธ
The Receipt: Active federal class action lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson Consumer, Inc. for false advertising โ€” alleging 13 of 15 ingredients are not plant-based as claimed.
๐Ÿญ Owned by: Johnson & Johnson
Herbal Essences
"90% Natural Origin Ingredients"
โš–๏ธ Active Lawsuit
The Claim
"90% natural origin ingredients" prominently displayed on front label. Bio:Renew technology with "antioxidants, aloe & sea kelp."
The Reality
A federal class action lawsuit filed in California alleges these hair care products do not contain the identified percentages of natural-origin ingredients โ€” because even if certain ingredients are available in nature, they are created through industrial processes at the scale required for mass production and are therefore NOT natural-origin.
๐Ÿ”ด Red Flag Ingredients Found
Fragrance Sodium Lauryl Sulfate Methylisothiazolinone Dimethicone
โš–๏ธ
The Receipt: Active federal class action lawsuit against Procter & Gamble filed February 2024 โ€” challenging "natural origin" ingredient percentage claims as deceptively misleading.
๐Ÿญ Owned by: Procter & Gamble
Burt's Bees
"Natural" โ€” the beeswax lip balm in every purse
๐Ÿšซ Greenwashing
The Claim
Natural skincare, naturally differentiated. Rustic hand-drawn branding, Burt's bearded face, and "natural ingredients" messaging across the entire product line.
The Reality
The fragrance in Burt's Bees products ranks 8 out of 10 in toxicity โ€” known for contributing to allergies, skin irritation, and respiratory disease. And the biggest secret? Burt hasn't been involved with his Bees since 1993. The folksy branding is purely a marketing construct for a Clorox product.
๐Ÿ”ด Red Flag Ingredients Found
Fragrance (toxic score 8/10) Phenoxyethanol Lactic Acid derivatives
๐Ÿ“‹
The Receipt: EWG ingredient analysis + independent toxicity scoring confirms synthetic fragrance rated 8/10 hazard score in a product marketed as natural. Burt's Bees acquired by Clorox in 2007 for nearly $100 million.
๐Ÿญ Owned by: The Clorox Company โ€” maker of bleach
Native Deodorant
"Natural Deodorant" โ€” the clean swap everyone recommends
๐Ÿšซ Greenwashing
The Claim
Positioned and marketed as THE natural deodorant alternative. "Safe for your body." Minimalist clean packaging that signals wellness and transparency.
The Reality
Native contains synthetic fragrance โ€” which by definition cannot be natural. After P&G's 2017 acquisition, thousands of consumers reported chemical burns and severe skin reactions. Synthetic fragrance hides undisclosed hormone-disrupting chemicals. A "natural" product that burns your skin is not natural.
๐Ÿ”ด Red Flag Ingredients Found
Fragrance (synthetic) Baking Soda (high concentration โ€” causes burns)
๐Ÿ“‹
The Receipt: Thousands of documented consumer complaints of chemical burns publicly reported after P&G acquisition. Synthetic fragrance confirmed in ingredient list โ€” contradicting "natural" positioning.
๐Ÿญ Owned by: Procter & Gamble โ€” acquired 2017
Tom's of Maine
"Natural" Toothpaste โ€” the original clean dental brand
๐Ÿšจ FDA Warning
The Claim
Natural toothpaste made with simple ingredients. The original "natural" dental brand trusted by health-conscious families for decades. Maine-crafted, naturally derived.
The Reality
In November 2024 the US FDA issued a warning letter to Tom's of Maine after finding "disease-causing bacteria and mold-like and powdery substances" in their products and facilities. The FDA also found that Tom's had received hundreds of consumer complaints but had not investigated them. Additionally independent lab testing found their Children's Fluoride Toothpaste tested positive for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic.
๐Ÿ”ด Red Flag Ingredients Found
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate Carrageenan Glycyrrhizin Propylene Glycol
๐Ÿšจ
The Receipt: FDA Warning Letter November 2024 โ€” disease-causing bacteria found in products and facilities. Independent third-party lab testing of children's toothpaste: positive for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic.
๐Ÿญ Owned by: Colgate-Palmolive โ€” acquired 2006
Alba Botanica
"Natural" โ€” botanical skincare sold at Whole Foods
๐Ÿšซ Study Exposed
The Claim
Botanical, plant-powered skincare marketed as natural and safe. Sold prominently at natural grocery stores reinforcing the "clean" perception.
The Reality
A Silent Spring Institute study published in Environmental Health Perspectives specifically called out Alba Botanica for containing phthalates, hormone disruptors, and other questionable ingredients โ€” in a product line marketed entirely as natural.
๐Ÿ”ด Red Flag Ingredients Found
Fragrance (phthalates) Phenoxyethanol Methylisothiazolinone
๐Ÿ”ฌ
The Receipt: Silent Spring Institute study published in Environmental Health Perspectives โ€” peer-reviewed scientific journal โ€” specifically identified Alba Botanica products as containing hormone disruptors despite natural marketing.
๐Ÿญ Owned by: Hain Celestial Group
Chapter 03 โ€” Cleaning Products

The "Eco" Brands Owned
by Chemical Companies

The brands with the plant imagery and lavender scents that are owned by the exact corporations making conventional toxic cleaners.

Method
"People Against Dirty" โ€” the design-forward eco cleaner
โš–๏ธ Lawsuits Filed
The Claim
"People Against Dirty." Plant-based formulas, biodegradable ingredients, paraben-free claims โ€” all wrapped in award-winning eco-conscious packaging.
The Reality
Class action lawsuits have alleged the presence of Methylisothiazolinone and Phenoxyethanol โ€” linked to skin sensitization โ€” that are not always listed clearly. Method also uses synthetic colorants that can be contaminated with heavy metals or PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons).
๐Ÿ”ด Red Flag Ingredients Found
Methylisothiazolinone Synthetic Colorants Fragrance Phenoxyethanol
โš–๏ธ
The Receipt: Class action lawsuits alleging undisclosed harmful preservatives. Independent ingredient analysis confirms synthetic colorants with heavy metal contamination risk.
๐Ÿญ Owned by: SC Johnson โ€” maker of Windex, Raid, Pledge, and Drano
Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day
"Garden-Inspired" โ€” everyone's favorite lavender spray
๐Ÿšซ Greenwashing
The Claim
"Garden-Inspired" cleaning products. Plant-derived ingredients. Cruelty-free. The lavender and basil scents signal natural wholesomeness in every kitchen.
The Reality
Mrs. Meyer's contains synthetic fragrance โ€” which cannot be "garden-inspired" because fragrance formulas are synthetic and legally protected from disclosure. Same parent company as Method. Those comforting garden scents? Undisclosed synthetic chemicals.
๐Ÿ”ด Red Flag Ingredients Found
Fragrance (synthetic) Methylisothiazolinone Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
๐Ÿ“‹
The Receipt: Ingredient list confirms synthetic fragrance โ€” directly contradicting "garden-inspired natural" positioning. Same SC Johnson ownership as Method means same corporate manufacturing standards.
๐Ÿญ Owned by: SC Johnson โ€” same parent as Method, Windex, Raid
Seventh Generation
"Plant-Based" โ€” the OG eco cleaning brand
๐Ÿšซ Greenwashing
The Claim
Plant-based, eco-friendly, sustainable cleaning products. One of the most trusted names in the natural cleaning space for decades.
The Reality
Once a genuinely trusted eco-brand, Seventh Generation now belongs to Unilever. Their own website admitted they were "working to be free of chronic toxins by 2025" โ€” meaning they were still using chronic toxins while marketing as clean. They still contain synthetic fragrance and Methylisothiazolinone.
๐Ÿ”ด Red Flag Ingredients Found
Fragrance Methylisothiazolinone Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
๐Ÿ“‹
The Receipt: Brand's own website language: "working to be free of chronic toxins by 2025" โ€” a direct admission of current toxic ingredient use. Acquired by Unilever โ€” one of the world's largest conventional consumer goods companies.
๐Ÿญ Owned by: Unilever โ€” also owns Dove, Axe, Vaseline, and hundreds of conventional brands
Chapter 04 โ€” Food & Grocery

When "Organic"
Isn't What You Think

The food brands hiding behind organic certification while containing ingredients that should make you put them back on the shelf.

365 Whole Foods Market Organic
"Organic" โ€” the store brand of the healthiest grocery store
๐Ÿ”ฌ Lab Tested
The Claim
Whole Foods' own organic store brand. The implicit promise is clear โ€” if it has the Whole Foods 365 Organic label, it has been vetted and it is safe.
The Reality
Third-party independent laboratory testing of 365 Whole Foods Market Organic Cocoa Powder found positive results for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic. "Organic" certification screens for synthetic pesticides โ€” it does NOT screen for heavy metal contamination. Owned by Amazon.
๐Ÿ”ฌ
The Receipt: Independent third-party laboratory testing โ€” publicly documented by lead safety researcher Tamara Rubin โ€” confirmed heavy metal contamination in a certified organic product. Organic โ‰  heavy metal free.
๐Ÿญ Owned by: Amazon โ€” acquired Whole Foods 2017
Banana Boat Sunscreen
"Reef Friendly" โ€” safe for the ocean and your family
โš–๏ธ Sued in 2 Countries
The Claim
"Reef friendly," "reef safe," and "harmless to coral reefs" โ€” marketing claims designed to appeal to environmentally conscious parents.
The Reality
Sued in both the United States AND Australia for these claims. While the products are free of SOME chemicals that harm coral reefs, they contain other chemicals that are toxic to corals according to both the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and the Santa Clara County District Attorney.
โš–๏ธ
The Receipt: Concurrent lawsuits filed in USA (Santa Clara County DA) and Australia (ACCC) in 2024 โ€” specifically for "reef friendly" and "reef safe" claims found to be misleading.
๐Ÿญ Owned by: Edgewell Personal Care
Chapter 05 โ€” Baby Products

The Most Dangerous
Greenwashing of All

They know parents will pay anything to protect their babies. And they're counting on that love to sell products that aren't as safe as they claim.

The Honest Company
"Honest" โ€” literally named after trustworthiness
โš–๏ธ Multiple Lawsuits
The Claim
Non-toxic, natural, safe for babies. The brand name itself is the claim โ€” Honest. "We rigorously test all of our products." Founded on the promise of transparency.
The Reality
The Honest Company has faced multiple class action lawsuits over its "natural" and "non-toxic" claims. One lawsuit specifically called out Sodium Lauryl Sulfate โ€” a known irritant โ€” in baby products marketed as gentle and non-toxic. The most ironic greenwasher in this entire guide.
๐Ÿ”ด Red Flag Ingredients Found
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate Synthetic Preservatives Fragrance
โš–๏ธ
The Receipt: Multiple class action lawsuits for misleading "natural" and "non-toxic" claims โ€” specifically including the presence of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate in baby products. Lawsuits span multiple years and multiple product lines.
Babyganics
"Plant-Based" โ€” non-allergenic baby care
๐Ÿšซ Greenwashing
The Claim
Plant-based, non-allergenic, safe for the most sensitive baby skin. Pediatrician awareness marketing that implies professional endorsement of safety.
The Reality
Owned by SC Johnson โ€” same corporation as Method and Mrs. Meyer's. Ingredient lists contradict "plant-based" and "non-allergenic" claims. Methylisothiazolinone โ€” a known allergen and preservative โ€” found in products specifically marketed as non-allergenic for babies.
๐Ÿ”ด Red Flag Ingredients Found
Sodium Lauryl Sulfocetate Phenoxyethanol Fragrance Methylisothiazolinone
๐Ÿ“‹
The Receipt: Ingredient analysis confirms Methylisothiazolinone โ€” a known allergen โ€” in a product marketed as "non-allergenic." SC Johnson acquisition confirmed, same manufacturing standards as conventional cleaning products.
๐Ÿญ Owned by: SC Johnson โ€” same parent as Windex, Raid, and Drano
Johnson's Baby
"Gentle" and "Pure" โ€” trusted since 1893
๐Ÿ’ฐ $100M+ Settlements
The Claim
"Gentle," "pure," and "safe for baby" โ€” the most trusted baby brand in America for over 100 years. Generations of parents reached for the yellow bottle without question.
The Reality
Johnson & Johnson has paid over $100 million in settlements related to toxic ingredients in their products. Their talc-based products were linked to ovarian cancer and mesothelioma in thousands of women. Despite "gentle" and "pure" marketing, products contain synthetic fragrance and parabens.
๐Ÿ”ด Red Flag Ingredients Found
Fragrance Parabens PEG Compounds Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
๐Ÿ’ฐ
The Receipt: Johnson & Johnson has paid over $100 million+ in lawsuit settlements related to toxic ingredients โ€” including the most famous talc-cancer lawsuit in American legal history. Thousands of plaintiffs. Decades of "pure and gentle" marketing.
๐Ÿญ Owned by: Johnson & Johnson
Flintstones Vitamins
"Complete" children's multivitamin โ€” pediatrician recommended
๐Ÿšซ Greenwashing
The Claim
Complete children's nutrition. Pediatrician recommended. The childhood vitamin millions of families trust for their children's health and development.
The Reality
Sugar is the first or second ingredient. Contains Red 40, Blue 2, and artificial flavors โ€” the exact artificial dyes the EU requires warning labels on for hyperactivity risk in children. You are giving your child an artificially dyed sugar tablet marketed as nutrition. Owned by Bayer.
๐Ÿ”ด Red Flag Ingredients Found
Sugar (1st ingredient) Red 40 Blue 2 Artificial Flavors Aspartame (some formulas)
๐Ÿ“‹
The Receipt: Ingredient list โ€” publicly available โ€” shows sugar as primary ingredient followed by artificial dyes the EU requires hyperactivity warning labels on. FDA does not regulate supplement claims before market.
๐Ÿญ Owned by: Bayer AG โ€” pharmaceutical company
Chapter 06 โ€” Supplements

What's Really
In Your Vitamins

The supplement industry is completely unregulated. No FDA review before products hit shelves. No verification of health claims. And some of the most trusted names have serious problems.

AG1 (Athletic Greens)
"The world's most premium nutritional supplement" โ€” $79-99/month
โš–๏ธ Active Lawsuit 2026
The Claim
"The world's most premium all-in-one nutritional supplement." Endorsed by hundreds of influencers and podcasters. NSF certified. The $79-99/month price point signals premium quality.
The Reality
ConsumerLab independent testing found AG1 contains significant amounts of lead and other heavy metals. Compared to another greens powder, AG1 had 8x the levels of cadmium, 10x the levels of arsenic, and 18x the levels of lead. There have also been multiple reports linking AG1 with liver injury.
โš–๏ธ
The Receipt: ConsumerLab independent testing confirmed heavy metal contamination. Active class action lawsuit 2025-2026 with new plaintiffs continuously joining. State attorneys general in California and other states monitoring litigation. AG1 founder resigned in 2024 amid separate legal controversies.
Nature Made
"America's #1 Pharmacist Recommended" vitamin brand
โš–๏ธ Active Lawsuit
The Claim
America's #1 pharmacist recommended vitamin brand. "Natural flavors." Green leaf logo. The trusted pharmacy staple for families everywhere.
The Reality
A class action lawsuit claims Nature Made gummy vitamins are "false, deceptive, and misleading" because the product contains DL-malic acid โ€” commercially manufactured from petroleum products โ€” while the label simply lists "malic acid" hiding its synthetic origin. The "natural flavors" label hides petroleum-derived ingredients.
๐Ÿ”ด Red Flag Ingredients Found
DL-Malic Acid (petroleum-derived) Artificial Colors Sugar (primary ingredient) Carnauba Wax
โš–๏ธ
The Receipt: Active class action lawsuit โ€” independent lab testing confirmed petroleum-derived DL-malic acid in "natural flavored" products. Lawsuit alleges violation of federal and state ingredient labeling regulations.
Olly Vitamins
"Feel Good" wellness supplements for women
๐Ÿšซ Underdosed + Toxic Dyes
The Claim
Fun, approachable wellness supplements designed for women and moms. Bright modern packaging that feels clean and health-forward. "Feel Good" positioning.
The Reality
Independent laboratory analysis found the majority of active ingredients are underdosed โ€” meaning you're not getting what the label implies. Products contain Red 40, Yellow 5, and artificial colors in supplements marketed as a wellness product. Contains synthetic folic acid instead of methylfolate โ€” which 40% of the population cannot convert.
๐Ÿ”ด Red Flag Ingredients Found
Red 40 Yellow 5 Folic Acid (synthetic) Sugar Carnauba Wax
๐Ÿ”ฌ
The Receipt: Independent supplement analysis confirms underdosing of active ingredients. Ingredient list confirms artificial dyes Red 40 and Yellow 5 โ€” the same dyes the EU requires hyperactivity warning labels on โ€” in a wellness supplement for women.
๐Ÿญ Owned by: Unilever
Thorne Prenatal DHA
"Premium" prenatal โ€” recommended by functional medicine doctors
๐Ÿ”ฌ Heavy Metals Found
The Claim
One of the most trusted "clean" supplement brands recommended by naturopaths and functional medicine doctors. Premium prenatal DHA for pregnant and nursing women.
The Reality
Independent third-party laboratory testing of Thorne Prenatal DHA found positive results for Lead, Cadmium, Arsenic, and Mercury โ€” documented in a 2025 lab report. This is a prenatal supplement. Intended for pregnant women. Heavy metals cross the placental barrier.
๐Ÿ”ฌ
The Receipt: Independent community-funded third-party laboratory testing 2025 โ€” positive for Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, and Arsenic in a premium prenatal supplement marketed to pregnant women. Report publicly available.
Just Ingredients
"Clean" supplements โ€” the TikTok and Instagram darling
๐Ÿ“œ Cease & Desist Sent
The Claim
Marketed heavily on social media as the clean alternative to mainstream supplements. Influencers positioned it as the honest, transparent brand you can trust.
The Reality
Just Ingredients sent a Cease and Desist letter to lead safety researcher Lead Safe Mama LLC in February 2025 after independent testing raised concerns about Lead and Cadmium content. Influencers affiliated with the brand had claimed products were free of these heavy metals when company reports showed otherwise. Clean brands with nothing to hide don't sue safety researchers.
๐Ÿ“œ
The Receipt: Publicly available Cease and Desist letter sent February 2025 to Lead Safe Mama LLC โ€” a well-known independent safety testing advocate. The letter itself is the receipt. When a "clean" brand legally threatens a safety researcher, that is information.
The Put It Back System โ€” Supplements Edition

See These Words on a Supplement?
Put It Back.

The supplement industry is unregulated. These ingredients are red flags across any brand โ€” premium or drugstore.

Titanium Dioxide
Whitening agent linked to inflammation and potential toxicity. Used to make pills look whiter. No nutritional value.
Magnesium Stearate
Cheap filler used to prevent clumping in manufacturing. May reduce absorption of the nutrients you're paying for.
Artificial Colors (Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 1)
Petroleum-derived dyes in a health supplement. The EU requires hyperactivity warning labels. The US does not.
Folic Acid
Synthetic B9 โ€” 40% of people with the MTHFR gene variant cannot convert it. Look for methylfolate instead.
Cyanocobalamin
Synthetic B12 โ€” significantly less bioavailable than methylcobalamin. Contains a cyanide molecule that must be detoxed by the liver.
DL-Alpha Tocopherol
Synthetic Vitamin E. The DL- prefix indicates synthetic origin. Look for d-alpha tocopherol (natural form) instead.
Hydrogenated Oils
Trans fats used as cheap fillers in supplements. Linked to inflammation and heart disease. No place in a health product.
Carrageenan
Gut irritant used as a thickener and filler. Linked to intestinal inflammation โ€” particularly problematic for anyone with gut issues.
Silicon Dioxide
Literally sand โ€” used as an anti-caking agent. May trigger intestinal damage and inflammation in people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.
Proprietary Blend
Legal way to hide exact ingredient amounts. Means the brand can use a sprinkle of an active ingredient while listing it prominently on the label.
Sugar as a Primary Ingredient
In a children's vitamin especially โ€” if sugar appears before the vitamins in the ingredient list, you are buying a candy product with a health label.
Carnauba Wax
Used as a coating and polishing agent. Adds no nutritional value. A marker of low-quality manufacturing focused on appearance over efficacy.
The Corporate Web

Who Really Owns
Your "Clean" Brands

The most shocking greenwashing isn't in the ingredient list. It's in the corporate ownership structure. These "independent clean brands" are owned by the exact companies you're trying to avoid.

How to Spot
Greenwashing Instantly

You don't need a chemistry degree. You need a system. Here are the 8 greenwashing red flags that work across every product category.

๐ŸŒฟ

Vague "Natural" Claims

The words "natural," "clean," "non-toxic," and "eco-friendly" have zero legal definition in the US. Anyone can put them on any product. These words alone mean nothing.

๐Ÿ“ฆ

Green Packaging Theater

Brown kraft paper, green logos, botanical imagery, and earthy color palettes are design choices โ€” not safety certifications. The packaging tells you nothing about what's inside.

๐Ÿญ

Corporate Acquisition

When a mega-corporation acquires a small clean brand, formulations often change. If your "clean" brand was bought by P&G, Unilever, SC Johnson, or Clorox โ€” look closer at the ingredient list.

๐Ÿ”ข

Percentage Claims Without Context

"90% natural origin" sounds impressive until you learn the remaining 10% can include hormone disruptors and synthetic preservatives โ€” and that "natural origin" ingredients can be heavily industrially processed.

โญ

Selective Certifications

"PFOA-free" doesn't mean PFAS-free. "Paraben-free" doesn't mean fragrance-free. "Recyclable packaging" says nothing about the product inside. Watch for partial certifications used to imply complete safety.

๐Ÿ‘ƒ

It Smells Like Anything

If a "natural" or "unscented" product has any detectable scent โ€” ask what's creating it. Synthetic fragrance can be used in "unscented" products to mask other odors. Truly fragrance-free products smell like their raw ingredients โ€” nothing more.

๐Ÿ“‹

Ingredient List You Can't Read

Genuinely clean brands list ingredients you can mostly recognize. If the ingredient list reads like a chemistry exam โ€” that's information. The more unpronounceable the list, the more industrial the processing.

๐Ÿ“œ

They Sue Safety Researchers

When a brand sends cease and desist letters to independent safety testers, that is not a brand that stands behind its products. Transparency-first brands welcome independent testing. Greenwashers litigate it.

Now you know what to watch for.
Here's what to do about it.

The Toxin-Free Living Guide gives you the complete "Put It Back" system โ€” 12 words that if you see them on any label, you put it back. No research. No Googling. 30 seconds in any store aisle.
